Prof.Dr. Tunc Ovali was born in 1957 and graduated from the University of Istanbul Faculty of Medicine (MD ) in 1980. After earning his MSc in Physiology he proceeded to conduct his residency period for Ophthalmology at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. At the same institute he continued his fellowship study for vitreoretinal surgery. His main fields of interest are vitreoretinal surgery in complicated diabetic retinopathy as well as vitreomacular surface diseases. After the introduction of the 23 G transconjunctival vitrectomies in 2005, he has employed this technique for all his subsequent surgeries and thus gained considerable experience in microincisional surgery. Through developing his own surgical equipment, he has improved the surgical outcomes in tractional detachment cases. Currently a member of the American, German and Turkish Ophthalmological Societies, he gained his professorship in 2001. He is currently the secretary of the Turkish Vitreo-Retinal Society and extensively participates in the educational training of young vitreoretinal surgeons.
