EFSTATHIOS T. DETORAKIS, MD, PhD, FEBOphth

PROFESSOR IN OPHTHALMOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF CRETE

Efstathios T. Detorakis received his Medical Degree at the Medical School of the University of Athens in 1991 with grade “Excellent”, completed residence training at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Hospital of Heraklion and a PhD thesis at the University of Crete. He then completed scholarship-supported clinical fellowships in Oculoplastic Surgery in UK (2000-2001) and Ocular Oncology, at the Jules Stein Eye Institute of UCLA, in Los Angeles, USA (2001-2002). Upon returning to Greece he was appointed Clinical Lecturer in Ophthalmology at Democritus University of Thrace (2002-2006), Consultant in Ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Heraklion (2006-2013), Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology (2010-2018), Associate Professor in Ophthalmology (2018-2022) and Full Professor in Ophthalmology (2022) of the University of Crete. His main clinical interests are oculoplastics, ocular oncology and glaucoma and since 2015 he performs Ru-106 brachytherapy procedures for intraocular tumors at the University Hospital of Heraklion. Moreover, he performs large numbers of procedures for eyelid, ocular surface and orbital tumors, including complex eyelid reconstructions, enucleations and orbital exenterations. He has authored and co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications with over 1500 citations and a Hirsch index of 25 (Scopus) and has presented many invited talks and papers in national and international medical meetings.  He has also authored several book chapters and 3 complete textbooks in Ophthalmology (ISBN: 978-618-84893-1-8, ISBN:978-618-5515-06-5 and 9786185515263), has received funding for 9 research projects in Greece and abroad (USA) and has taught residents in Ophthalmology as well as pre-graduate and post-graduate students in 2 Medical Schools (Democritus University of Thrace and University of Crete) for 2 decades (2002-present day). He is a reviewer and has been invited to act as an editorial board member in several peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals. He has also supervised several Master and PhD theses at both Democritus University of Thrace and the University of Crete, holds a patent for a valve implant to be used in glaucoma surgery, has served as President  in Regional and National scientific bodies in Greece, including the Cretan Ophthalmological Society and the Hellenic Oculoplastic & Reconstructive Surgery society (acting President) and has received several awards for paper presentations in National Ophthalmological Meetings.
